Resisting the Bush Agenda in the Streets...

Jed Brandt has written a must-read commentary on this week of protest examining police tactics, direct action protest and the importance of the resitance movement. The entire article is online here at the NYC Indymedia site. Here is an excerpt:

"After the unprovoked mass arrests at the Critical Mass bike ride on Friday, August 27, we can expect police to use a pattern of a) attempted containment, b) surge, c) demonstrative violence, and d) mass arrest. We can expect liberals to fear the popular outrage at the war, Bush's contempt for democratic rights and the NYPD's suppression of legitimate and non-violent protest.

We are winning. The city is coming out. Energy is on the trains and in the streets. It's unprecedented....

A popular resistance to the war and domestic repression will energize tens of millions alienated from any political action, and will let people under threat of American cruise missiles and F-16s know that we do not consent. We are not "good Germans" doing the leaders' business. We are a free people whether the government gives us permission or not. If we have to choose between the warmongers and the world: we choose the world. Our audience is small town America, the city we live in and the rest of the world. The conservatives are a tiny minority and the liberals defeated. We believe another world is possible and we're going to show it tomorrow. We will not allow police to suppress the will of the people. We are marching and the world will know. With their help, we can win."

Tonight, like many of my fellow commuters, I got home 2 hours later than I planned to. This was because a hoax bomb was placed on a train coming into Hoboken station, where over half of all NJ Transit trains have been re-routed. Go on the anti-RNC sites, and you'll see suggestions about putting chemicals on objects and leaving them on public transportation so that the K-9 units register them as "positive" and the whole system shuts down while the incident is investigated.

This is EXACTLY what happened.

Explain to me how being pro-environment jives with screwing the most massive metropolitan public transportation system in the U.S. Hey, here's an idea to get people out of SUVs and into public transportation -- FUCK UP PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. Because, you know, the people who prefer to take trains over cars to get to work are EXACTLY the kinds of people the left should want to piss the hell off.

I expect these are the sort of protesters who express their displeasure at the massive slaughtering machinery of southern hog farms and chicken-processing factories by spreading DDT on fields of organic produce.

Just as there are pro-lifers that bomb clinics and murder women and doctors in the name of "life", and extreme Islamist that bomb busses, there are extreme people with all sorts of belief systems. One extremist's action doesn't negate a whole philosophy, just as the genocides of multiple ethnic groups by early Christian crusaders doesn't negate the teachings of Jesus Christ of loving all men, no matter their viewponts. Most protesters are trying to remind people in support of war in the name of peace of Christ's teachings that peace is the power and war is truely the tactic of the weak.

Just a suggestion that you think about posting a calendar to tell people where to go to protest.
I just got in town and can't find out where to go...TIME OUT is all sold out, and that is the only place where I saw any direction as to what to do...

If you can't organize such info yourself, could you post the e-mail or other address or phone #(s)where someone could find out where to go so the ranks can swell and eager protesters won't be frustrated over their inability to protest?!!!

The need of Peace in our country is great. We need to stick together and support our President. The Blame should be on the terrosits, not on the man who attacked back. He defended "Our" country and I think we need to be supportive now more than ever. If he would of done nothing, people would of been screaming that Bush lets other nations get away with this! Does it matter to you what decision he would of made & is it possible that you would Protest no matter what our President would of decided to do?

Yes, the RNC protests and energy is in some ways "unprecedented".. or at least its been a good long while.

But why does Jed get to write about it for indymedia and I do not? Jed worked hard to organize a "lifetime ban" against me along with members of the small clique that controls NYC indymedia. (That happened 2 yrs ago)

I am a woman of color, an activist writer and have worked with NYC indymedia for over a year, when I and others started challenging the unspoken hierarchy and editorial policies. Many of us didn't appreciate having our articles re written to sound like diluted sanitized swill. After all that's what the corporate media does, and we came to indymedia for a different kind of journalistic experience. Many of us thought indymedia was the people's media, not Jed's media.

Not wanting to hear a challenge to their power, Jed and his clique (of 3 or 4 others who continue to dominate the nyc indymedia scene) lashed out against me - employing charachter assasination and other petty but destructive tricks to discredit me as "disruptive" etc. even though I had spent a year writing stories on things like cluster bombs, anti-terrorist legislation, the environmental crisis, etc.

Claiming to use consensus, Jed and his clique organized a witch hunt type banning where I was subject to a verbal stoning and deemed unworthy to participate in the nyc indymedia scene. Although there were 7 blocks, they over ride them and purged the meeting of anyone who would support me. It reminded me of Jeb's Florida voting scandal.

It continues to astonish me that a perdominantly white institution like indymedia has absolutely no problem kicking a woman of color out like a dog and silencing me, mostly because I challenged the way they ran the paper.

This clique should really start a corporation or something, because indymedia was suppossed to be managed quite differently. It was not suppossed to be hijacked by those who would treat it like their private property.

yes, they portend to serve the activist community, but decide with an iron fist who gets to write, and what their story will sound like. "All the news that's fit to print". Indymedia is suppossed to be a community project based on egalitarian principles. Or so I thought.

When I saw that movie OutFoxed, several times I commented to my friend, "wait - that happened to me, or they did that to my story, or they intimidated me that way..." etc.

We really hoped when indymedia was founded that it would significantly differ from FOX and corporate media. It's funny that nyc indymedia's logo is "become the media" because they have very much become like the gatekeepers and filters of the corporate media.

I thought that the logo IMC had in Seattle, "a place for the passionate tellings of truth" was real. I thought IMC was about having a safe place to create media. Instead I have met people like Jed who like to stand 3 inches from my face and tower over me and scream so that spittle flies.

That's the way I've been treated at the nyc imc's newspaper, the Indypendent. He and his clique are bullies and it is terribly shameful that this is the so called "alternative" scene tolerates that type of intimidation towards women and people of color.

I am now working with different alternative media producers and some of us want to reclaim nyc indymedia and make it a safe space that is not so alienating. I feel that the feds already have the corporate media, and that we should not allow them to corrupt indymedia.
